Chapter 35
The next morning, I woke up early. Iâd had a restless night, nightmares plaguing me. I dreamt that Tyler was chasing me and Kara through dark woods. I couldnât see her in the gloom, but I could hear her screaming, âMom, help me!â In the darkness, I could also hear Tylerâs dark chuckle as he pursued us.
I awoke with a start, thankfully cutting the nightmare short. I didnât want to know what happened at the end.
It was a Saturday, but Grant had left an hour or so before to go put in a few hours at the office. He was behind on a few of his big projects, and he sometimes liked going in on Saturday mornings to catch up. Early on weekends, the offices were mostly empty, and he could work undisturbed.
Jason had decided not to stay the night, as he and Tyler were heading out to a new nightclub after dinner. Iâd pulled him aside as they got ready to leave. Clutching his jacket sleeve, I begged him to be careful, reminding him to always keep his eye on his drink. I told him that it wasnât only women who had to be careful of someone dropping something in their glass when they werenât looking. Plus, I didnât trust Tyler one bit. Heâd made it clear he would get to me in any way he could.
This left the house empty but for Kara and me. I lay still, listening for any sound coming from downstairs, but all was quiet. She must still be in bed.
I wasnât looking forward to the confrontation I knew was bound to happen today. I had embarrassed her in front of company, and she would not be quick to forgive me. I reasoned that when this was all over, I would do whatever it took to mend our frayed relationship.
Through the curtains, I could see that it was a bright, sunny morning. Before Tyler, I had left the curtains open most nights. I enjoyed watching the stars wink in the dark of the night and waking up to sunbeams playing on my closed lids in the morning. No more. I felt as though I never wanted to open that window again. If I could board it up, I probably would.
On second thought, no. I wouldn't allow Tyler to take anything else from me.
Thinking Iâd surprise Kara with breakfast, I rolled out of bed. Pancakes used to always put her in a good mood. Yanking on my robe, I headed downstairs to the kitchen.
To my surprise, I saw the door leading to the back patio was partially open. I peeked out and spotted Kara perched on the edge of one of the pool loungers. She was hunched over her phone, rapidly tapping out a text message.
âKara?â I called her name tentatively, as I stepped further onto the patio.
She startled, then jumped up and quickly shoved her phone in her pocket.
âJesus, Mom, why do you insist on sneaking up on me like that?â She tried to deflect.
